World Record Broken By Native Hawaiian, Archie Kalepa As The First Person To Stand Up Paddle 187 Miles Down The Colorado River
(Los Angeles, CA and Flagstaff, AZ - September 23, 2009) The explore team, lead by filmmaker and philanthropist Charles Annenberg Weingarten, along with a select number of Native American guests, will conclude a two week raft trip down the Colorado River and will arrive at Flagstaff Pulliam Airport on Monday, September 28, 2009 at 11:30am.
explore hosted Native American non-profit leaders from the Hopi, Navajo, Lakota, and Anishinaabe tribes on the 17-day river raft trip. explore's goals were to learn firsthand how the Grand Canyon changes lives and how improving our relationship with the earth can better society. Native American tribes of the Colorado plateau shared stories about the emergence of their cultures to help explain how nature and the Canyon influence their lives.
While on the trip, legendary Hawaiian big wave rider Archie Kalepa, head of Ocean Safety and Rescue of Maui County, broke a world record as the first person to stand up paddle 187 miles down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Mr. Kalepa was invited by explore to highlight the similar experiences of Native Americans and Native Hawaiians. He has dedicated his record breaking paddle to water rights awareness.
