Symbolism Alone Will Not Bring Change

I have watched with keen interest and renewed hope as your campaign has mobilized millions of Americans behind your message of changing a political system that serves a small economic elite at the expense of the peoples of the United States and the world. Your election as president of the United States, where slaves and Indians were long considered less than human under the law, will undoubtedly constitute a historic moment in race relations in the United States.

Yet symbolism alone will not bring about change. Our young people, black and Native alike, suffer from police brutality and racial profiling, underfunded schools, and discrimination in employment and housing. I sincerely hope your campaign will inspire some hope among our youth to struggle for a better future. I am, however, concerned that your recent statement on the Sean Bell verdict, in which the New York police officers who fired 50 shots? at a young man on the eve of his wedding were acquitted of criminal charges, displays a rather myopic view of the law. Until the law is harnessed to protect the victims of state violence and racism, it will serve as an instrument of repression, just as the slave codes functioned to sustain and legitimize an inhuman institution.

As I can testify from experience, the legal institutions of this nation are far from racial and political neutrality. When judges align with the repressive actions and policies of the executive branch, injustice is rationalized and cloaked in judicial platitudes. As you may know, I have now served more than three decades of my life as a political prisoner of the federal government for a crime I did not commit. I have served more time than the maximum sentence under the guidelines under which I was sentenced, yet my parole is continually denied (on the rare occasions when I am afforded a hearing) because I refuse to falsely confess. Amnesty International, South African Bishop Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama of Tibet, my Guatemalan sister Rigoberta Menchu, and many of your friends and supporters have recognized me as a political prisoner and called for my immediate release. Millions of people around the world view me as a symbol of injustice against the indigenous peoples of this land, and I have no doubt that I will go down in history as one of a long line of victims of U.S. government repression, along with Sacco and Vanzetti, the Haymarket Square martyrs, Eugene Debs, Bill Haywood, and others targeted by for their political beliefs. But neither I nor my people can afford to wait for history to rectify the crimes of the past.

As a member of the American Indian Movement, I came to the Pine Ridge Oglala reservation to defend the traditional people there from human rights violations carried out by tribal police and goon squads backed by the FBI and the highest offices of the federal government. Our symbolic occupation of Wounded Knee in 1973 inspired Indians across the Americas to struggle for their freedom and treaty rights, but it was also met by a fierce federal siege and a wave of violent repression on Pine Ridge. In 1974, AIM leader Russell Means campaigned for tribal chairman while being tried by the federal government for his role at Wounded Knee. Although Means was barred from the reservation by decree of the U.S.-client regime of Richard Wilson, he won the popular vote, only to be denied office by extensive vote fraud and control of the electoral mechanisms. Wilson’s goons proceeded to shoot up pro-Means villages such as Wanblee and terrorize traditional supporters throughout the reservation, killing at least 60 people between 1973 and 1975.

It is long past time for a congressional investigation to examine the degree of federal complicity in the violent counterinsurgency that followed the occupation of Wounded Knee. The tragic shootout that led to the deaths of two FBI agents and one Native man also led not only to my false conviction, but also the termination of the Church Committee, which was investigating abuses by federal intelligence and law enforcement agents, before it could hold hearings on FBI infiltration of AIM. Despite decades of attempts by my attorneys to obtain government documents related to my case, the FBI continues to withhold thousands of documents that might tend to exonerate me or reveal compromising evidence of judicial collusion with the prosecution.

I truly believe the truth will set me free, but it will also signify a symbolic break from America’s undeclared war on indigenous peoples. I hope and pray that you possess the courage and integrity to seek out the truth and the wisdom to recognize the inherent right of all peoples to self-determination, as acknowledged by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. While your statements on federal Indian policy sound promising, your vision of “one America” has an ominous ring for Native peoples struggling to define their own national visions. If freed from colonial constraints and external intervention, indigenous nations might well serve as functioning models of the freedom and democracy to which the United States aspires.

Danke Wasi! Der offene Brief von Leonard Peltier an Barack Obama hat mich zutiefst beeindruckt. Ich hatte bisher wenig Zeit, mich mit dem "Fall" Leonard Peltier intensiv zu beschäftigen, aber durch diesen Brief weíß ich jetzt, was er für ein besonderer Mensch sein muss. Hoffentlich gelingt es dem LPDOC, endlich seine Freilassung zu erwirken.

Für diejenigen, die uns die Geschichte von Leonard Peltier, das ist ein schlechter Tag. Wir wussten, dass der wahrscheinlich an einem anderen Gefängnis haben wir gelernt, dass dies leider getan wurde, noch einmal. Aber wir nie erwartet hätte, um die Fakten und unsäglichen so schwer, obwohl alle von uns daran gewöhnt, die schlimmsten Ungerechtigkeiten zu Lasten von Native Americans. Wir sind auf den Ertrag der Konten, die mündliche Verhandlung auf das Wort und nähert sich die Männer und die Interessen, die ihn in ein Gefängnis für das Leben, für die begangenen Verbrechen MAI, sind wieder einmal ihre abscheulichen Aktionen gegen Peltier. Helfen Sie ihnen in dieser schwierigen Zeit! (Virginia Vielen Dank für die Berichterstattung ..)

Dies ist die Berufung von Betty Peltier-Solano, die Schwester von Leonard, die Leonard Peltier Defense Offense-Ausschuss:

"Liebe Fans LP, ich bin so wütend!

Mein Bruder Leonard wurde schwer geschlagen, wenn er in der Bundesrepublik Gefängnis in Kanaan. Nach seinem Transfer, einige Häftlinge haben angegriffen. Die Schwere der Verletzungen erlitten hat sie mehrere Schläge auf den Kopf und Körper, hat eine große Beule auf dem Kopf, vielleicht eine Aufregung, mehrere Prellungen. Darüber hinaus einen seiner Finger sind geschwollen und verfärbt und hat Schmerzen in seinem Brustkorb und Brust. Es war sein Blut, weil der Verletzungen.
Wir glauben, dass das FBI hat orchestriert und ermächtigt die Behörden Gefängnis angreifen und deshalb sind wir sehr besorgt um seine Sicherheit. Es ist möglich, dass die Angreifer, die selbst wissen, Leonard, wurde angeboten geringeres Strafmaß für die Durchführung dieser schrecklichen Angriff. Es ist noch am Anfang sind die Worte zu Leonard, und dies könnte eine Verschwörung zu diskreditieren sie als Modell gefangen. Leonard wurde in Einzelhaft mit nur einer Mahlzeit, dies erfolgt in der Regel, wenn Sie nicht möchten, dass zu sagen, wer war (NDT: und vor allem als eine Strafe für diejenigen, die zurückgekehrt sind und contrattaccato ...). Aufgrund seiner Diabetes, eine Mahlzeit ernsthaft untergraben seine Gesundheit. Die Beamten des Gefängnisses, weigern sich, alle Informationen an die Familie, die Notwendigkeit zu hören, von seinen Anhängern Unterstützung zum Schutz der Sicherheit, auch schriftlich an den Präsidenten Obama. Seine Anwälte versuchen, die Dinge im Ort.

nach meinen informationen ist leonard peltier wenige tage nach diesem vorfall in das gefängniss verlegt worden welches seine anwälte vorgeschlagen hatten.
er befindet sich daher näher an seiner familie und in einem jail in dem überwiegend nativs sind.

Der Native American-Aktivist Leonard Peltier hatte gestern (am Dienstag ) in Pennsylvania seine erster Anhörung vor dem Wiederaufnahme- Untersuchungsausschuß seit 15 Jahren, nachdem er seit 33 Jahre im Gefängnis für den im angelasteten Mord an zwei FBI-Agenten einsitzt.
Sein Anwalt, Eric Seitz, sagte nach der Anhörung, dass er mit einer Entscheidung der Kommission innerhalb von drei Wochen rechnet.

Zur Anklage:Die FBI -Agenten wurden im Jahr 1975 während einer Schießerei mit Mitgliedern des American Indian Movement, AIM auf der Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota getötet.Peltier, ein Mitglied der Bewegung und in Verdacht am Tod der FBI-Agenten beteiligt bzw. schuld zu sein, floh nach Kanada. Er wurde 1977 von der RCMP in Alberta verhaftet, und an die Vereinigten Staaten ausgeliefert, wo er der Tat für schuldig befunden wurde und verurteilt wurde.Er selber beteuerte seine Unschuld an der Tat.
Peltier-Rolle im Zusammenhang mit den Todesfällen der FBI-Agenten " wurde auch im Zusammenhang mit der Ermordung der AIM-Aktivistin Anna Mae Pictou Aquash" von Nova Scotia gesehen. Anna Mae Pictou Aquash wurde lt. FBI Aussagen getötet, weil sie öffentlich zugegeben hätte...(?) Wissen von Peltier's Beteiligung zu haben.

John Trimbach, der Sohn eines der getöteten FBI-Agent von Pine Ridge sagt, Peltier sollte nicht freigelassen werden bis er die Verantwortung für das was passiert ist übernimmt und Reue zeigt.

Peltier-Anhänger halten ihn als einen politischen Gefangenen. Im Laufe der Jahre entstanden Zweifel über seine Schuld und über die Fairness des Verfahrens, es wurde Informationen über Nötigung von Zeugen und gefälschte Erklärungen laut. Peltier ist für viele zu einem Idol in der Kampagne für Native American Rechte geworden und bekam auch internationale Auszeichnungen für sein Engagement( während seiner Gefängniszeit).

dem Wunsch von Sandra schließe ich mich natürlich ( gemäß der von Amnesty verurteilten Tasache, dass vom FBI wissentlich falsche Beweise benutzt wurden um die Auslieferung von AIM Aktivist Leonard Peltier aus Kanada im Dezember 1976 zu bekommen) gerne an !

Daneben gibt es aber im Fall der Vorkommnisse von Pine Ridge noch andere "Betroffene".., denen ich hiermit ein Podium geben möchte:

1.- Amnesty Internatinal-Erklärung zu der Verhaftung von Graham am 12.Dezember 2003:
(John Graham, Native aus Yukon und Vater von 8 Kindern, wurde am 30.März 2003 zusammen mit Arlo Looking Cloud (49j.) von der U.S. des Mordes an Anna Mae Aquash vor 28 Jahren angeklagt.)

Hallo zusammen,

auch ich hoffe inständig, daß nun nach 33 Jahren zugunsten von Leonard Peltier entschieden wird !

Da ich als Aussenstehender nicht mehr darüber weiß, was sonst so im Internet darüber geschrieben wird,
möchte ich mir auch kein abschließendes Urteil darüber anmaßen.
Nach einer so langen Zeit wird niemand mehr so genau wissen, was damals genau auf dem Gelände der
Jumping Bull´s geschah.
Und auch das Schicksal von Anna Mae Aquash gehört natürlich restlos aufgeklärt.

Sioux Falls, S.D. - Einer der beiden Angeklagten im Prozess zur Klärung der Ermordung des American Indian Movement Mitglieds Annie Mae Aquash vor mehr als 33 Jahren,
Richard Marshall, stellte erneuert seine Forderung nach einem gesonderten Verfahren.
Beide Fälle sollten im Mai zusammen verhandelt werden , aber John Graham ist kanadischer Stammesangehöriger ( genauso wie es das Opfer war) und damit gibt es Zuständigkeitsprobleme in der Rechtslage für seinen Prozess.
In dem Antrag auf ein eigenes, schnelles Verfahren, schrieb Marshall's Anwalt, Dana Hanna, dass ihr Mandant seit August vorigen Jahres im Gefängnis ist und die anhängige Beschwerde keine Auswirkungen auf seinen Fall hat.

Die Angeklagten Clarke, Marshall und Looking Cloud sind alle Lakota aus South Dakota.

Richard Marshall und John Graham plädieren auf nicht schuldig, während die Staatsanwälte davon ausgehen das beim damaligen Vorfall noch die beiden o.g. anderen damalige AIM Mitglieder beteiligt waren (einer von ihnen wurde 2004 verurteilt und soll im nun verzögerten Prozess gegen Graham und Marshall als Zeuge aussagen und der andere ist aus gesundheitlichen Gründen lt. seiner Anwälte verhandlungsunfähig).
